The speaking in the intro of "Etiäinen" is spoken by Tuomas. However, after this recording Tuomas Holopainen decided that Turunen's operatic voice was too powerful for a project like this one, and decided to add in metal elements. The first idea of the band was to create music much like the music played around campfires. The group's name, "Nightwish", comes from the first song they recorded together, and the demo included this song along with "The Forever Moments" and "Etiäinen". Recorded from October to December of 1996, it is an acoustic album on which Emppu played acoustic guitars. It's untitled, but it's known under the name "Nightwish" today. Nightwish is the first demo by Nightwish. Nightwish - Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan (2004) Nightwish - Live Norway Rockefeller Oslo (2003) Nightwish - From Wishes To Eternity (2001) Nightwish - Over The Hills And Far Away (2001)

Nightwish - Sleeping Sun (4 Ballads of the Eclipse) (1999) Nightwish - Pharaoh Sails To Hafenbahn (1999) Nightwish - Sacrament Of Wilderness (1998) Maybe it's because he grew out of that stage, yet I can't help but wonder.2008 - Angels Fall First (Finnish 2008 Edition) Pt.1Ģ008 - Angels Fall First (Finnish 2008 Edition) Pt.2Ģ008 - Wishmaster (Finnish 2008 Edition) Pt.1Ģ008 - Wishmaster (Finnish 2008 Edition) Pt.2Ģ008 - Century Child (Finnish 2008 Edition) Pt.1Ģ008 - Century Child (Finnish 2008 Edition) Pt.2ġ999 - Sleeping Sun (Four Ballads of the Eclipse)Ģ001 - Over the Hills and Far Away (Single) Even in their early days he wrote a lot of love ballads and songs about unrequited love (beauty and the beast, gethsemane, ever dream, etc) and since Tarja left he hasn't written literally any. I think this previously mentioned painful experience was his unrequited love for Tarja. That innocence will eventually be reborn because writing this album and naming it "Century Child" was maybe his way of preserving his final days of innocence. "As he died, he will return to die in me again:" I think the dead boy who is referenced in many NW songs is the century child, who is Tuomas in his purest state: a child. There is a lot of this throughout the album. "Gone back in time to bless the child/bless thee and keep thee forever:" he wants to revert back to his old self and cherish that state. I got this idea specifically from lyrics like: I've personally always thought the album was a personal dissertation on unrequited love marking the loss of innocence, most likely sparked by some painful experience. Love this discourse and all these interesting ideas. This is all just my speculation and opinion :)

What "century child" is, however, I do not know. Losing friends, losing a loved one, (almost) losing the band, I think all of that Tuomas went through especially was his experience of losing innocence, or losing things that brought innocence, or even things that were innocent. Again, I can only assume that dealing with such heartache only added the woe of losing innocence. That prompted him to write songs like Ever Dream, which in his words is about him "opening up about my feelings, the way I miss a certain person". And on that more personal level, Tuomas went through a break-up. Tuomas himself said he was going through a difficult time, on both a business level, and a personal level. The band is his baby, after all, and the drama that almost pushed the band to breaking up was like losing innocence to Tuomas, but that's my speculation. I think Tuomas said that Nightwish is part of him, or something along those lines. It was Tony Kakko who convinced Tuomas to change his mind while they were hiking in Lapland. In fact, Tuomas had messaged Tony Kakko about how he was seriously thinking about breaking up Nightwish, and after the last gig in 2001, he called records like Spinefarm to tell that Nightwish had broken up, albeit unofficially. Century Child was written when Nightwish were on the brink of breaking up due to drama going on in the band, like the differences between Sami and Tuomas, and Emppu complaining how he felt like a "hired gun" in the band who would "only do what he's asked to". That's what the album is about: the loss of innocence.
